Walls for defense purpose were traditionally products of inland conflicts and battles between states for more than 2,000 years in Chinese history. Taking the form of one or more non-enclosed earthen or stone ramparts mounted with passes, watchtowers, beacons, passageways and other auxiliary devices, they wound thousands of kilometers away. They straddled rivers and rode over mountains and hills, taking all advantage of natural barriers on their paths.
