This line is designed to recycle electronic waste such as printers, copiers, computers, telecom equipments, computer peripherals (keyboard, mouse, etc). A combination of automatic and semi-automatic procedures allow this line to convert e-waste into raw materials, single parts and components. Output materials include copper, aluminum, printed circuit boards (PCB), plastics, steel, and wire. The system has an automatic air filtration system (equipped with HEPA filters) so that the workplace air can be well protected.
Shredding and separation line consists of a number of machines designed to act on whole electronic scrap. The machinery can easily shred and break down the scrap into smaller pieces which will be sorted into groups of various raw materials. Some of these raw materials are further recycled using separate lines. For example, a printer will be broken down into plastic, ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, printed circuit boards and wires. The plastic and metals are completely recycled into raw materials.
The shredding and separation line will run on electricity at a total power of 195.28 kW and a total throughput of 2 tons/hour. A description of each machine follows:
Shredder
Whole electronic scrap will be input into the dual-shaft shredder. The machine will shred the scrap into strips/pieces of various sizes in the range of 2 cm up to 30 cm which are output on a conveyor and sent to the picking station.
Picking Station
The picking station is a platform and series of chutes where up to 4 workers will remove all pieces > 10 cm and sort them by material type into boxes. All remaining material is sent by conveyor to the next machine, the chain impact separator.
Chain Impact Separator
The chain impact separator will receive mixed material sized 2 to 10 cm. The machine consists of six chains attached to a central shaft. The shaft spins at ~1200 RPM causing the chains to collide with the incoming material. This has a size-reduction as well as a separation effect on the material. The output pieces will be in the size range of 0.2 to 2 cm and will be pure materials. For example, a 5 cm piece of plastic that was attached to a steel backing that entered the machine would exit as many smaller pieces of either plastic or steel only. The rest of the line consists of machinery that is used to sort out these pieces into pure raw materials.
Cross-Belt Magnet
This is a magnetic conveyor belt that is suspended above the output conveyor of the chain impact separator. Ferrous materials will be attracted to the magnet and output into a collection box.
Optical Sorter
It separates plastic from printed circuit boards via optical imaging and computerized comparisons under software control. As the separation from the Z-type gravity separator may not be perfect, this plastic stream may include some non-ferrous metals which also need to be separated.
Eddy Current Separator
The eddy current separator is used to extract the last remaining non-ferrous metals from the plastic stream, completing the recycling process. It employs a 18-pole magnetic drum that spins at up to 2800 RPM with a magnetic field intensity of 0.6 T. This field diverts the non-ferrous metals to be collected, leaving behind only pure plastic.
