Epoxy polyester hybrids are a combination of epoxy resin with polyester resin and are primarily used on file cabinets, farm equipment, drawer slides, hot-water heaters, shelving, oil filters, hospital furniture, and fire extinguishers. Epoxy-polyester hybrid coatings are more resistant to chalking than pure epoxies despite the fact that they are softer and less resistant to solvents and alkalis.
Property wise these resins are very close to their epoxy counterparts. When compared to pure epoxy coatings, epoxy-polyester hybrid coatings are generally tough, flexible, and competitively priced. Despite their improvements in weatherability, hybrids will begin to chalk nearly as quickly as epoxy coatings. Epoxy-polyester hybrids do not require primers as they bond very well to metal substrates. Other properties of this epoxy-polyester hybrid coating are very similar to epoxy powder coatings except that they offer added UV resistance because of the polyester. These hybrids are so similar in fact that they have the same uses as epoxies, especially when improvements in heat stability and/or weathering are a necessity.
Epoxy-polyester hybrid powders have excellent electrostatic spray characteristics, high transfer efficiency, and penetrate well into corners and recesses thus achieving excellent first-pass transfer efficiency.
Epoxy-polyester hybrid powder coatings exterior durability is superior to straight epoxy with test proving that new epoxy-polyester matte coatings provide better exterior durability than the matte powder previously used. In addition, epoxy-polyester hybrids are less expensive to use.
