UV disinfection equipment for drinking water


Advantages:
There are several advantages of using UV water filtration system rather than a chemical disinfection solution (such as chlorination):

1.No known toxic or significant nontoxic byproducts
2.No danger of overdosing

5.Requires very little contact time

UV treatment for water purification and drinking water has many advantages. In addition to high water quality (no risk of Legionella/example), UV disinfection system for water treatment is very reliable and easy to use.  


Flow rate
Shortening or lengthening UV exposure time (dwell time) determines the effectiveness and use of a UV sterilizer. Adjusting the flow rate through the sterilizer controls UV exposure time. In general, larger organisms will need a longer dose of radiation than smaller organisms. For example, a UV sterilizer set at a higher flow rate is capable of controlling bacteria and free-floating algae but may not be effective against parasites. Reduce the flow rate through the UV sterilizer to lengthen the time parasites are exposed to the UV light. With a slower flow rate, the same unit can now be used to help control parasites.

Bulb age
Lamp effectiveness declines with time. Compared to when it was new, your UV sterilizer will no longer produce the same results after months of use. Therefore, you may have to increase the dwell time (by lowering flow rate) to produce desired results. Replace the UV bulbs every 6 months, or per manufacturer's recommendation, in order to maintain UV efficiency. Also, clean the quartz sleeve of the lamp regularly to remove organic buildup. A clean quartz sleeve allows better penetration of UV light and maximizes the efficiency of the unit.

 
What Contaminants Do UV Sterilizers Remove? 
 
There are no micro-organisms known to be resistant to UV, unlike chlorination. UV is known to be highly effective against bacteria, viruses, algae, molds and yeasts, and disease causing oocysts like cryptosporidium and giardia. In practice, bacteria and viruses are the cause of most major waterborne pathogenic diseases. Of these enteric viruses, hepatitis virus and Legionella pneumophila have been shown to survive for considerable periods in the presence of chlorine, but are readily eliminated by UV treatment. For most microorganisms, the removal efficiency of UV for microbiological contaminants such as bacteria and virus generally exceeds 99.99%. 


How is a UV sterilizer installed?

The UV sterilizer should be the last piece of equipment in the system before the water is returned to the aquarium. It should be preceded by the biological and mechanical filters, and any chemical filter or heat exchanger in the system. Follow the manufacturer's directions on installation. Most units use hose barb connectors to attach to the appropriate water pump or are designed to allow add-on connectors as a PVC slip fit or hose barb attachment.

What is the proper maintenance schedule for UV sterilizers?

The quartz sleeve will need to be checked monthly and removed and cleaned with rubbing alcohol. Some larger UV sterilizers have wiper mechanism units installed for easier maintenance.

For most units, the UV bulb will need to be replaced after 6 months of continuous use, however, this time may vary so be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. When installing or changing a bulb, never look directly at the bulb when the unit is turned on. Doing so can result in permanent damage to your eyes. (The damage can occur without you feeling any discomfort.)

Always disconnect the unit from the electricity when performing maintenance to protect against possible shock. When turned on, the bulb becomes especially hot when in the air and submerging it in water may cause it to break.

Limitation of Use
The UV water disinfection system NOT intended for the treatment of water that has an obvious contamination or intentional source, such as raw sewage, nor is the unit intended to convert wastewater to microbiologically safe drinking water.
