I. THE WOOD
Kempas is generally imported from Asia and grows in Malaysia and Indonesia. The heartwood is a fairly consistent color which ranges from orange-red to reddish-brown with subtly contrasting yellow to pale white tones. The heartwood will darken with time. Kempas is somewhat similar to Cumaru from Brazil but does not have as much definition in the grain.
Kempas has been very popular as a less expensive alternative tropical hardwood. Available in prefinished solid only in two widths.
II. TECHNICAL DETAIL
Kempas hardwood flooring is another example of a truly hard hardwood. One of the most hard working and dent-resistant floors, Kempas is even stronger than oak and quite a bit tougher than Canadian hard maple. It may be strong, but Kempas hardwood flooring is beautiful too. Unlike the other dark brown exotics, Kempas is predominately earthy red with complementary tones of amber and pale yellow. Its grain is subtly spiraled making it appealing to a wide variety of tastes. Kempas hardwood flooring is a nice alternative to American cherry for those looking for that reddish-brown floor without the dramatic changes in colors.
