Product Description
The 102ED is an outstanding dual astro-imaging and visual telescope at an affordable price. Its fully multicoated, air-spaced 102mm doublet objective has one element made from extra-low dispersion (ED) optical glass for very good colour correction.
We recommend this barebones package for someone who wants to do visual observing and/or imaging, and who wants to choose their accessories to go with the telescope. This telescope doesn't come with eyepieces or a finder - however it deserves premium eyepieces, and delivers the results at a very good price. We recommend a Telrad finder to go with this scope.
Visual observing: We have tested this scope, and the 102 ED delivers impressively sharp, contrasty views of the moon and planets. Fine gradations of colour in the cloud bands of Jupiter are visible for example, and high power views of the moon are stunning. Star clusters and nebulae are visible against a dark background due to the high contrast delivered by the ED doublet lens. Don't take our word for it - check out the reviews on the web.
For astro photography: The 102 ED's focal length is 714mm with a moderately fast focal ratio of f7.0. The 102 ED responds very well to field flatteners as a result of it's F7 focal ratio, especially the Televue 0.8x Flattener (#RFL-4087), which delivers a very nice flat field at a faster F ratio of F5.6 (570mm focal length). This transforms the scope into a fast astrograph with a flat field, perfect for serious CCD imaging. The Astro Tech Zero Power field flattener also works fine on this scope.
Mechanics: The scope is extremely light, being made from aluminium and having a doublet lens design. This places far less demand on your equatorial mount. The dual speed focuser has a 1: 10 ratio reduction gear, which allows fine adjustments for imaging and visual use. A pair of metal tube rings come with the scope as well as a Vixen/Synta dovetail bar, however we recommend the larger Altair "Losmandy" format dovetail bar as a good upgrade so you can mount the scope more securely for imaging with a guide scope piggybacked on top. An engraved millimetre scale on the focuser drawtube let's you swap accessories and bring the scope to focus quickly and easily. What you get: The telescope, rings and an extruded Vixen style dovetail bar. The rest is up to you choose - based on your intended use for the scope.
