LED Tube Lights
 
Internal LED Tube Lights can be a direct replacement for traditional Tube lights.6 ft tube lights with T8 fittings are a direct replacement for 6ft T8 flourescent tubes. However it is important to note that the characteristics of a traditional Tube light and LED Tube light are different, therefore to change the fitting is often the cheapest and quickest way to install the replacement LED Tube light.
 
The T8 LED Tube light has some significant advantages over traditional fluorescent tubes. Noticeably with these LED light bulbs there is a direct safety feature. The Tube lights are not made of glass, they are made of plastic, which means they are very robust and cannot shatter. In fact you can drop them on the floor without any problem to the casing.
 
Significantly there is a considerable energy saving with these units. The saving is not as great as with some other LED light bulbs, however as Tube lights are often on for such long periods of time - in offices and working areas where the 6ft T8 tube lights are used - the overall savings are easily compensated for.
 
Traditional fluorescent tubes are gas filled (commonly Mercury vapour and Argon) and require a high voltage charge to initially pre heat the elements at each end of the tube and ignite the gas. This then fluoresces to give off light. This initial charge is provided by a ballast unit, in the form of an induction coil with a capacitor to regulate the current passing through the tube. This charge is sent in bursts via a starter switch (a 4cm long cylinder with two pins at one end, often housed on the side of the unit) and continues until the gas in the tube ignites and begins to fluoresce. The starter function then ceases automatically and the light being produced by the fluorescent tube is sustained using normal mains voltage.
