IDC Punch-Down Tool - for attaching data cable to connectors.
Used for - This IDC punch-down cable seater is an essential tool for anyone needing to attach cable to connectors with IDC terminals, most likely RJ45 connectors to CAT5 or CAT5e cable. IDC terminals are normally located on faceplates and patch panels.
IDC or 'Insulation Displacement Connectors' are used in a variety of low current applications such as telecommunications, networking and PC internals. The idea is that the specially shaped connector traps the wire very tightly using tiny sprung blades. As a result, the terminal makes a secure, gas-tight connection for signal transfer, cuts through the plastic insulation and grips the wire, all in the single movement of pushing the wire into the terminal.
The resulting connection is extremely reliable if fitted properly, as well as being quicker and cleaner than a separate stripping and soldering process, as the wire's core has essentially been sealed in the insulation, never exposed to dirt or contaminants, until the moment it is driven into the connector. At which point, only the bare minimum of the insulation needed to make the connection is removed, making it a very clean solution, which only contributes to its reliability.
Why would I need this? - Because the input channels in the contacts are so small, and the contacts are so close together, it is easy to damage them by attempting to force the wires in using an inappropriate tool.
Features - This IDC Punch-down tool is ideal for the job, not only does it press the wire cleanly into the terminal, its spring-loaded mechanism ensures the right amount of force is used, making sure the contacts remain undamaged. The downward pressure also actuates a pair of precision cutting blades that trim off any excess wire protruding from the terminal effortlessly giving a clean, tidy finish.
The tool also includes a built-in folding wire extractor, for safely and cleanly removing wires from terminals, as well as a 'spludger' or 'spudger'-a hooked metal tool for adjusting and retrieving small wires from bundles of many.
