The storage of whole blood or red corpuscles is associated with the formation of considerable quantities of microaggregates between 25um and 40umThese microaggregates are fundamentally made up ot degenerated leukocytes and thrombocytes,fragments of red blood cells and other cells,lipids,lipoproteins and precipitated denaturated albuminThe conditions and the storage period influence the type and amount of microaggregates presentThe scientific literature shows that microaggregates with larger dimensions(i.e.more than 40um)are often present in extremely high concentrations
it has also beel shown that a relation exists between acute respiratory failuer and the presence of microaggregates in the pulmonary circulation of patients who have undergone massive transfusions
