L-Thyroxine

It is extracted from the thyroid gland of healthy bovine, sheep and porcine. It is not soluble in common organic solvents, such as water, ethanol and etc. It is soluble in ethanol which contains inorganic acid or alkaline and in alkali hydroxide and carbonated alkali solutions. Adding sodium nitrite in its acidic ethanol solution and heating them, it shows the color of yellow, and then adding an excess of aqueous ammonia, it becomes pink. Thyroxine is T4, four triiodothyronine.
Function and Application:
It can promote general tissue metabolism and improve nerve excitability and physical development. It used for the treatment of hypothyroidism, myxedema and cretinism. L type has strong activity. It promotes cell metabolism, increases oxygen consumption, and stimulates tissue growth, maturation and differentiation.

Properties: it is white odorless and tasteless needle-like crystal. L type is white crystals. Decompose at 235 –236ºC.
Optical rotation is -4.4 degree (3% at 0.13 mol/L NaOH in 70% ethanol).
