Pointing with a stick has been the traditional way of pointing for teachers during centuries. It works because the stick offers a "path" that you can follow with your eyes, and find the place being pointed at. By contrast, a laser pointer is very distracting. To find the spot, you have to scan the entire area. If the spot moves too fast, it's probably gone by the time you finish your visual scan. I recommend a stick pointer, like this one, over a laser pointer.

-Why not use laser instead?
Laser pointers work great, but they're pricey, not quite durable enough for military life, and the batteries always die at the worst possible time. This pointer is steel (I believe), requires no batteries, and clips to any pocket or uniform neatly. It's also extremely light-weight and has a very "professional" look. Works perfectly in the field or in a Command and Staff briefing.
