Ulva lactuca belongs to the green alga and it is a quite plentiful type of wild alga in China.
Medicines and foods can be homologies. Ever since ancient times, ulva lactuca has been widely used both as food and medicine. It is recorded in Chinese Materia Medica that Uiva pertusa "can be used to cure such symptoms like constipation, stagnation of phlegm in the bosom, difficulty with urinating or stagnation of qi under the naval"; "It could make the lumps disappear, cool the fever and remove the phlegm, help the discharge of urine and detoxicate. It could be applied to laryngitis, swelled neck lymph node, dropsy, furuncles and galls, etc. "
Ulva lactuca is rich in amino acid, vitamins, polysaccharide, minerals and polyunsaturated fatty acid, especially rich in active materials which could promote animals' immunity and resist cancers. That's why it is called the "Ganoderma lucidum" of the ocean.
