PbF2 scintillator grown from a melt exist in cubic form (b-PbF2), the most outstanding properties are its high density (7.77g/cm3), short radiation length (0.93cm) and small Moliere radius (2.2cm), and its transmittance extends to the near UV (250nm), It also show rather good radiation hardness and the radiation damage can be cured by optical bleaching.
Main applications of PbF2 scintillator
Being a Cherenkov radiator, it dose not produce as much light as a scintillating crystal, but its light output is sufficiently high to give an energy resolution equal to or better than lead glass. The relatively inexpensive cost make it a very promising material for electromagnetic calorimeter. In addition it is an attractive candidate for use in reactions where particle multiplicities are very high or where a high degree compactness is desired.
